Dublin truly became the Irish capital in the 18th century as a century of peace and prosperity allowed the city to burst through the boundaries of the old medieval fortifications and grow into the second city of the British Empire. On this tour, you will explore the art, architecture, politics and culture of Georgian Dublin (1718-1830). The tour will begin in front of the Georgian House Museum in Merrion Square, the finest preserved Georgian Square in Dublin, where you will see some of the best preserved Georgian architecture in Dublin. On this tour, learn about the art, culture and politics of Dublin's golden age. Visit centers of learning like Trinity College, where you will learn about the growth of the University of Dublin with the construction of the neoclassic campus still present today. You will also enter the long room library home of the Book of Kells. Visit centers of power such as the old Irish parliament on College Green and enter the preserved House of Lords. Learn about Dublin's commercial core, Temple Bar, where a mercantile class made Dublin a hub of European trade and the 7th largest city in Europe, and visit the beautiful Royal Exchange, built in 1779. You will also visit the centers of imperialism and rebellion, Dublin Castle and the Liberties, once the heart of British rule in Ireland, the other a training ground for Republican rebels. On the last leg of this tour, you will visit some of the major neoclassical sites in Dublin including the Four Courts, the General Post Office and the Custom House as you meet the architects of the 'Gorgeous Mask' - James Gandon, Thomas Burgh, and William Lovett Pierce. Learn the sad story of Dublin's fall from grace, which began with an economic depression in 1815 that would last several generations. Finish the tour with a drive to Castletown House, the most stunning Georgian Big House in Co. Dublin.
