Great harbour sea food spot if the sun is shining. Good Guinness on tap, fabulous selection of oysters, very good fish and chips. Would recommend keeping your orders simple, the simple menu items are brilliant.
The welcome was excellent. Even on a very busy day, a very friendly gentleman managed to reserve us a table outside so we could enjoy the sunshine in Howth. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was not as positive. The two pints took around 35 minutes to arrive. We ordered fish and chips and tempura prawns, but both dishes lacked flavour. The fish was under-seasoned, the peas were not enjoyable, and the salad arrived wilted. In addition, the food was served cold, giving the impression that it had been sitting on the counter for some time before being brought to our table. The total bill came to €86. I might return for a beer, but not for the food. That said, the waiters were very friendly and polite throughout the service.
The mussels were well cooked - although the manu said there is a piece of bread, yet there was not, they did compensate with a skinny fries, which was not bad, but for me the mussels pot always goes much better with a piece bread so that you can enjoying the soup, in this case there is misleading information and also it kind of take half of fun of having mussels this way. There is an ask for tip - which might be a tourist place thing just preparing for that.
Service was quite poor overall. One of our two dishes was forgotten and served much later, while other tables who arrived after us were served first. When the missing dish finally arrived, the apology was brief and came from a staff member not responsible for the issue. The same staff member who forgot the order also repeatedly bumped and pushed our chair while passing without any apology, which felt very uncomfortable. Fish and chips was good, but the service needs serious improvement.
Beshoffs The Market has a great selection of fresh seafood products. There are also ready to eat items as well as groceries to cook at home. They have a cafe with fresh pastries located in the market as well.
