Climb aboard the Jeanie Johnston and explore the history of over one million Irish people who emigrated during the famine years. Around 2,500 passengers made the difficult journey on the Jeanie Johnston vessel.
The tour begins above deck, where you will walk around the upper deck to see the tall masts, appreciate the craftsmanship, and learn about the ship’s unique history—including its transition from carrying timber to transporting emigrants.
From this vantage point, take in the sounds and sights of Dublin’s Docklands. Feel the breeze, breathe in the sea air, and hear the calls of gulls while learning about 19th-century tall ships and maritime trade. You will also discover how the replica ship was constructed to reflect the original Jeanie Johnston.
Next, go below deck to experience the cramped living conditions of up to 250 passengers who spent most of their voyage in confined spaces, only allowed brief periods of fresh air daily. Hear personal stories of passengers and crew, learn how they financed their journey, understand the food they ate, and imagine the hardships they endured, including disease, starvation, and the threat of disaster.
