Description
The Irish Potato Famine was one of the most devastating events in Ireland’s history and among the worst famines globally in terms of deaths relative to population. Despite Ireland being part of the wealthy British Empire, sufficient food was available during the famine years. However, over a million people died from starvation and disease, and millions more were forced to emigrate. This exhibition explores how such a tragedy occurred.
Located on the 2nd floor of Stephens Green Shopping Centre, the exhibition is open daily from 12pm to 6pm. Visitors should allow at least one hour to explore. The exhibition includes several rooms with storyboards presenting the famine's history in a clear, step-by-step format. Benches are available in each room, including seating for a 15-minute overview film.
On display are two original 19th-century newspaper articles describing the catastrophe, two personal letters (one from a tenant to a landlord, another from a father to his son), and an original cast-iron soup pot.
The exhibition content is also available for purchase as a book and USB stick at the reception desk. The USB version breaks the storyboards into films with mood music and includes the 15-minute overview film.
