Description

A 2.5-hour walking tour in 7 stages, during which 7 of the key figures of the Rising will tell us their stories. These stories will help us understand how the rising came about after 700 years of occupation, what happened during the days of battle, and the consequences of the rising, with the killing of the leaders and the road to the War of Independence. Starting at Trinity College, a Protestant institution, we will meet Pearse, who will tell us about Irish identity and the Gaelic League. At the General Post Office, Connolly will share his vision of the Republic, with the egalitarian ideas that are set out in the declaration of independence. We will then move on to City Hall, where we will meet Kathleen Lynn, a doctor and commander of the outpost. We will learn about the role of women in the insurrection, Countess Markievicz, and future prospects. At Dublin Castle, we will hear stories of Dubliners who found themselves in the crossfire between the United Kingdom and Ireland. We will then continue to the Four Courts where, with Edward Daly, we will see the young people leading the insurrection. On Moore Street, Joseph Plunkett will give us a romantic look at the rising, with his love story with Grace and his wedding on the eve of his execution in Kilmainham Jail. We will then return to Trinity College where the only surviving leader of the rising, Éamon de Valera, will take us through the War of Independence and the birth of the Irish Free State.
