Hodges Figgis
Dublin
Hodges Figgis is renowned internationally for its range of books. It's a bright, cheerful shop, stocked to the rafters with a seemingly endless array of titles to match the length of its illustrious history. And it boasts a cameo appearance in literary history itself, having been mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses - albeit briefly.
Behind the imposing façade, you'll meet friendly and knowledgeable staff who will be delighted to assist you in finding the right book. Fantastically well-informed, they'll go the extra mile to help however they can, whatever your request. If you'd like to keep your finger on the publishing pulse, Hodges Figgis also host regular events including launches, readings, talks and signings (keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter for announcements).
Sprawling over three densely-filled floors, the extensive selection includes a truly exceptional Irish section, a vast international travel category, and a fantastic science fiction section. In fact, it's astounding how comprehensive the offerings at Hodges Figgis are across all areas of interest. And if they don't have an item in stock, just ask - they'll gladly order it for you.
In these 'posh' and distinctly un-cheap surroundings, you might be convinced that everything will be full price - but that's not the case. Be sure to check out the Bargain books section (in the basement, naturally) for some great deals.
Much appreciated by local students (Hodges Figgis also operate the student bookshop in Dublin City University), this is the kind of classic bookstore that is in increasingly short supply these days. It certainly inspires adoration and loyalty amongst book lovers far and wide - long may Hodges Figgis reign.
