Another enjoyable link course on the Irish Sea. St. Anne's "pairs" with Royal Dublin on the island nature reserve. I was welcomed by the club pro, Billy (and as it turns out his daughter) as we talked about the course and my trip. This was the sixth round and 5th links course in the eight 8 days. Billy joined me for the opening 6 holes as the loop north and back to the club house. My caddy, Ryan, was with me for the balance. Billy has a love for golf that is infectious - in a good way. St. Anne's lays out right in front of you. Generous fairways, but trouble is waiting on the edges. Billy mentioned that once growing season start, the rough grows up and will hurt missed fairways. An abnormal northeast wind (club to club and a half wind) greeted us today. The fairways are rewarding with a lot of run out. Bunkers are well placed to keep you focused on proper shot positioning. It was great to be able to use a variety of shots - flighted tee and approaches as well as running up shots or hitting the front of reels with some roll out. Greens are big with some decent undulation throughout. St. Anne's is open and welcoming to visitors. As always, I recommend a caddy as a visitor to understand the proper lines, approaches, and local flavor. St. Anne's will be on my return trip.
