DescriptionYour tour begins at Christ Church Cathedral (1183) which was constructed on the orders of the English King Henry II. Henry was the first ruler to grant permission for a Jewish community to be established in Ireland. The community was small, but flourished until the Edict of Expulsion in 1290 drove the Jews from Ireland and England. The modern history of the Jews in Ireland begins with Oliver Cromwell. By Crane Lane, learn how the new community developed with the inviting of Sephardic Jews to England in 1657. Next enter Dublin City Hall and learn about the noble part played by Irish Jewry in relieving the horrifying effects of the Great Famine. The Irish people under their leader Daniel O'Connell, who is commemorated in statue form in the main hall, would repay this debt by aiding in the removal of anti-Semitic laws in 1846. On Chancery Lane the first of a wave of Jewish refugees from the Russian Empire arrived in the 1890s and increased the size of the Jewish population to 5500 within a generation. Hear the harrowing stories of Litvak refugees, their new home in the slums of Dublin and why they left their homeland in Lithuania and Poland. At this point in the tour you will take a cab to the heart of Jewish Dublin 'Little Jerusalem'. After a quick coffee in the Kosher bakery you will visit points of interest, such as the home of Ettie Steinberg (the only Irish victim of the Holocaust), the old Jewish Tailor's Union, Oakfield Place (the most Jewish street in Dublin) and the location of a vicious string of murders in 1923. Your tour will finish at the Irish-Jewish museum (1985), as you explore the oldest synagogue left intact in Ireland and a wealth of stories about Ireland's old community and hear about a new thriving one.
