Description

Travel back over 1,100 years and immerse yourself in Viking Dublin. Travel back in time and discover the city that existed long before the Dublin we know today. Join me on a walking tour of some of the places that help us understand how the city was founded and grew during the Viking era. The tour begins at Dublin Castle, next to Dubh Linn Garden, where the ancient lagoon that gave Dublin its name once stood. This place is located in an area linked to the city's earliest settlements and will allow us to discover what this landscape was like before it became the Dublin we know today. We'll then continue to Wood Quay, one of the most important places for learning about Dublin's Viking past. Here, archaeological excavations unearthed numerous remains related to the everyday life of its inhabitants more than a thousand years ago. We'll talk about how they lived, traded, and worked along the River Liffey. We will then arrive at Christ Church Cathedral, located in the heart of old Dublin. The cathedral has its roots in a church founded around 1030 by Bishop Dúnán and the Norse King of Dublin, Sitriuc. We'll discover the connection between the Norse community and the city's Christian tradition. Our route will continue to Dublinia and St Michael's Tower, where we can get even closer to the Viking world. Dublinia recreates different aspects of life in Viking Dublin and features artifacts found at the famous Wood Quay excavations. We'll also learn about the history of the medieval tower that is part of the complex. Throughout the tour, we'll talk about ships, markets, trade, artisans, beliefs, conflicts, and everyday life, as well as discover how the Norse presence transformed Dublin and how the city evolved after the Vikings lost their political control. We'll finish at Dublinia and St Michael's Tower, putting into context everything we've learned during the tour and the traces that the Viking past has left on the city. A route to see Dublin with fresh eyes, discover the traces that the past has left beneath its streets, and get a glimpse of the lives of those who inhabited this city more than a millennium ago. Come and immerse yourself in Viking Dublin. Skål!
